Over the past few years, interior design and home construction trends have been becoming more and more modern in their aesthetic. Windows are no exception to this trend. While there are many different types of windows on the market, they all seem to have a few qualities in common. No matter your design preferences, these new trends in windows should be kept in mind when creating or remodeling your home.
Natural and organic have been at the forefront of recent home construction trends. The more natural light that can be in a space, the better that space is. One of the easiest ways to achieve this natural light is through open pane windows. As such, one of the newest window trends is expansive glass and the choice of installing pass-through windows. Favoring larger panes of glass over smaller ones allows more light into the room.
Additionally, with the increased use of exterior spaces for entertainment, larger windows, like those in sliders or french doors, are often chosen instead of traditional doors. This way, the exterior space can feel a part of the house as a whole, even if it is not actively being used.
Another aspect of the modern design aesthetic is the preference for squared or straight lines over arched or curved lines. Traditionally, many houses used dormer windows or the bay window style to convey more light into a space. These types of windows are still being used, however, their shape is that of a square, and only straight lines are used. These geometric creations evoke a more modern or futuristic aesthetic that is used in the construction of many Northern Virginia homes.
The desire for these types of windows means, homes that sport more curved windows may quickly look outdated. Furthermore, this means that fixed or casement unit windows are being chosen more often for installation than the traditional double-hung windows.
In line with design trends for other interior parts of the house, darker colors seem to be the new trend for 2018. Specifically, windows with black or metallic framing are more often chosen than other types of windows. Having a window with a darker frame adds a statement piece to a room, and is a rather simple way of adding a pop of color without overwhelming the rest of the design aesthetic. A black or metallic frame is also evocative of an industrial look, another current design trend.
